Entry Design / Way Finding (RMIT Med) - RMIT student work, 2020
This project asked students to develop a concept entryway design and mural for the RMIT bioscience building at the Bundoora Campus as part of a refurbishment program undertaken by the uni. This entryway needed to reflect the bio-sciences in its design as well as incorporate a way-finding element that would assist students in finding their way around the campus and inform them of class locations and times. These elements of the design needed to be incorporated in such a way that they did not interfere with movement through the corridor where the design would be situated.
My concept for the Bio-Science hallway draws on the beauty found within the forms of the human body and its systems. It has been inspired by the vivid cellular patterns seen in contemporary documentation of human tissues as well as the incredible historical anatomical works of art created to capture these biological complexities in centuries past.
My main source of inspiration for this project stemmed from my experience of the renaissance era anatomical museums found in Italy, These museums integrated scientific teaching, anatomical knowledge, and artistic beauty into their displays, I felt that these qualities could also be found throughout the history of anatomical study. Early anatomical scientists such as Da Vinci and Vesalius, for example, produced amazing representations of the human body which straddled the line between art and science.
